Middle School Update Update: So then the NEXT day...

The 5th Grader, originally uploaded by Life in the Pumpkin Shell.
I swear. This is why I'll be mumbling for days to myself in the nursing home --which, I hope there'll still BE nursing homes when I'm of age (42 at this rate) because I am gathering so much mumbling material, I'm gonna be a legend.

Got off track.

Because my life IS on a track. That scary one the kids are too short to ride on all by themselves.  The up and down thrills and nausea and that feeling like you're gonna fly out if you don't lock your toes onto the seat ahead of ya, and then another climb, another fall, crazy people in front of you waving their hands in the air like they've got no sense at all...

Today was an EXCELLENT day for Jack.

One day one thing. Next day --OPPOSITE.

In fact.

The phone rang around lunchtime. Had the school's i.d. blinking at me...

'Mother lovers!' I pre-cursed. 'What has he done NOW???'

It was him.
It was Jack.
Calling from school.

"Hello, mom. This is your son Jack."

"Huh?"

"Jack. Your son. Mom? Are you listening to me?"

"Waaa...why are you calling, Jack? Are you supposed to be on the phone?"

I mean, hehehe...(mad cackle)...he didn't storm the principal's office with a band of pirate children and take hostages, right? I hoped.

"Mom, I'm just calling to let you know that I am having a great day at school."

"Oh."

"The BEST! Seriously."

"Well...that's...great."

"And so I'll see you later after gym. Okay?"

"After gym...like, you're still riding the bus home, right?"

"Yes, of course. See you later."

*Turn your eyes away if you can't handle the F-bomb.

Fcuk!! WOW!!!  GARGH.

My kid doesn't even normally do phone calls. He answers, he listens (sort of), he passes the phone off to the appropriate person.

I mean.

Yeah.

When he returned home, he came up and gave me a pat on the back.

"So you had a good day, huh?"

"Yep. Almost got an A+ on my spelling. Missed Tennessee, though. Oh, and I happened to win a certain something for ya..."

He produced a paper from his backpack.

Jack received the Fabulous Behavior Award (for exhibiting model behavior in school). Don't know if it's a weekly thing or daily or just a way of reinforcing positive over negative, but that explains his phone call, and man did that boy have a swagger after he saw my very proud face.

Plus, he did great on his science test.

But me being me, I still asked:

"Did you remember to apologize to your teacher today for yesterday?"

He nodded. "She's a great lady," he said. "Really understanding. I like her a lot."

So.

I want the seat by the canary and ALL the Jello I can steal.  See ya'll there.
